For 30 years I have worked, raced, partied, and dined with Darren Law, an equity partner in Flying Lizards Motorsports. Our relationship began when I was a student at The Bondurant School of High-Performance Driving. He was the Chief Instructor at the time. This prestigious racing school has over 500,000 graduates including a huge number of top professional racers. We partnered with this school trading free disc brakes for school access. After many days on track together, Darren became a close friend as well as a business partner. His role at the school continued to grow as he became COO of the school. I helped him change from PFC to Power Stop brakes because the school needed more coverage of their fleet of race cars including their Corvettes. Bob Bondurant, Darren, and I are in this photo as we were testing brakes in preparation for PFC being removed as the brake supplier.
Bob relied on Darren because he knew Darren was fast, had incredible car control, and had an amazing memory. Bob also respected the fact that Darren won the Daytona 24-Hour race overall, a feat that few can accomplish. Shortly after this photo, we sponsored a dinner party with Arvin Scott, the boss of Power Stop, as we were rolling out the new marking partnership. Darren called Don Burgoon a few days later and gave him the news that PFC was being replaced. A few months later, Don died in a 2-car collision in Italy.
As Bob slid into weakness, Darren kept me informed. I flew to Barbados for the school and proposed opening a new race school on the island. The minister of culture, sports, and youth was keen to move ahead. We worked with friends of the BARL, Barbados Auto Racing League. The minister asked me to have their police and bus drivers trained ASAP to help lower their vehicle crash damage.
Upon my return to Phoenix, we met in Bob’s home. I could tell he was slipping away. I never saw him after that meeting. RIP, Bob.
Darren joined Flying Lizards in Sonoma, California, after we lost Bob. I contacted Darren to help us with our client in England, Orthene Chemicals Ltd. We executed a testing event at Apex Motor Club in Arizona to test Castrol SRF vs their newest science, Halo P1 Racing Brake Fluid. The launch is now proceeding well in Europe, UK, and America. Once again, Darren and I teamed up to help people with their business and racing-related products.
Charlier Ker is the CEO of Orthene. He flew over to witness the testing event with his son Lloyd. Jean Moncrieff from Zurich joined us for dinner with Darren and his wife as Lloyd and Charlie returned to England. Jean and I helped Orthene and their Board of Directors in London during their Board Meeting held in Wembley Stadium.
Darren’s daughters are both on their path to becoming doctors. Darren is a great Dad.
What a great guy.
